About the Exhibition
August 2nd - 24th
August is officially recognized as Lao American Artists Heritage Month in Minnesota, a proclamation that has been issued by the Governor since at least 2015. This month celebrates and acknowledges the significant contributions of Lao artists and culture builders both within the United States and the broader Lao diaspora.
Somchay specialized in bronze casting sculpture from his training in Japan. He’s also an expert in capturing a beautiful moment in time with his painting skill. He has worked with multiple cross country partnerships in Asia for his art skills. With over 30 years of experience in the Fine Arts field, Somchay’s skills in painting and sculpturing celebrate Laos heritage and the Buddhist way of living.
This project was made possible in part by the people of Minnesota through a grant funded by an appropriation to the Minnesota Historical Society from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
From the Lao Center of Minnesota:
“With an extensive background in Lao traditional arts and crafts, Somchay brings a deep-rooted cultural perspective and creative spirit to every project. Raised in Laos, he draws from his lived experience and heritage to create immersive spaces that celebrate Lao identity, craftmanship, and storytelling.
Notably, Somchay is also known for his intricate paintings, which reflect traditional Lao themes, landscapes, and spiritual symbolism. His artwork invites viewers to connect with the history, values, and beauty of Lao culture. Through his work, Somchay fosters a creative environment that encourages hands-on learning and cultural appreciation for all generations.”
