a note from the artist

I remember “cross-stitching” with my grandma when I was younger. I stitched the same spot over and over again until I created a little mountain on my aida cloth and happily showed my grandma. She was not impressed with it but I didn’t care either and never touched it again. I started taking Hmong paj ntaub seriously when I went to college out of state and was one of only two Hmong students on campus. I was afraid that I would lose my Hmong identity, language, and culture so I taught myself Hmong paj ntaub as a way to desperately connect with and hold onto my Hmong identity. In this process, I learned that cross-stitching is meditative which then is healing. Cross-stitching is transcendence because it connects us to generations of paj ntaub artists, many of whom were women. I hope that my workshop would be a collective regrounding and healing space for participants.
